Menopause is the permanent cessation of menses caused by the loss of ovarian steroids. The median age of women when this occurs is 50 to 51 years. One of the endocrine changes that takes place involves thinning and degeneration of the vaginal tissues. This may lead to vaginal dryness, burning and itching, as well as pain or bleeding with intercourse. Vaginal moisturizers and topical or systemic estrogen therapy have both been recommended for management of symptoms.
